The New Silk Road, Part 1: From China to Pakistan | DW Documentary

Posted on September 27, 2020 by admin

The New Silk Road is a mammoth project intended to connect China with the West. It’s a gigantic infrastructure project that Beijing says will benefit everyone. But this two-part documentary shows China’s predominant self-interest and geopolitical ambitions.

The old Silk Road is a legend, whereas the New Silk Road is a real megaproject. China wants to reconnect the world though a network of roads, railways, ports and airports between Asia and Europe. A team of reporters travels by sea and land along the New Silk Road and shows how China, with the largest investment program in history, is expanding its influence worldwide. Their journey begins in Shenzhen on the Pearl River Delta. This is where China’s legendary rise to an economic superpower began 40 years ago. The private market economy experiment unleashed forces that allowed Shenzhen to grow into a mega-metropolis.
The team takes a container ship towards Southeast Asia. Its first stop is the port city of Sihanoukville in Cambodia. A joke is making the rounds there these days: you can now travel to China without a passport and without leaving your own country. Sihanoukville is now almost part of China itself! The Chinese have financed practically everything built here in the recent past: the extension of the port, new roads, bridges and factories. Many Cambodians are unhappy and feel like losers in the boom. Rising prices and rents are making the poor even poorer. But for land and house owners, on the other hand, it’s a bonanza.
In Myanmar, resistance is already growing. Locals in Kachin have successfully blocked a new dam project, asking how the Chinese could produce energy for their own country whilst leaving the locals themselves without electricity? The Myanmar government pulled the emergency brake and the huge Chinese dam project did not get beyond the first concrete piers in the river.
The Karakorum Highway from Kashgar in China across the Roof of the World to Islamabad in Pakistan is one of the most difficult and dangerous roads in this breathtaking mountain world. Once the road is finished, it often disintegrates again, and rock falls and landslides block the highway as if the Karakorum Mountains are trying to deny China strategic access to the Arabian Sea. The first part of the report ends in Islamabad.

" The country ( i.e. China) wants free exchange of goods and capital but not of people and ideas " . So true, that is why I love DW docs. 🙂

Hahahaha you guys are a maybe a little bit paranoid about China XD maybe relax a little bit? This documentary is very nice and informative but it's also ridiculous here and there. Is really Germany USA's little puppet ready to say all the things they want them to say all the time, to this extent? Or do you guys just personally think Chinese people are going to drink our blood from the veins in our necks?

So, basically what this documentary is trying to imply is Chinese investment is bad, it's for self-interests but the western investment is good, its like charity with no interests and political gains. Seems like they have forgotten the colonizing past.. oh sorry its Germany, they really suck at it.

The commentators are out to focus on the negatives of the development as thought the presence of the Europeans and the US do not bring social problems.

@DW I think documentary was about Silk route from China to Pakistan but I have watched 24 minutes and no sign of that. Just showing dark sides of China. I think it is not more than a Propaganda against China. I think You should focus on bloody America. which killed millions of people last 20 years in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan etc. Even not showing the Correct map of Pakistan which shows you are also effected by India. We love China Love for China From Pakistan.

    Wahnsinnsdoku, wirklich!

The crimes committed by the Chinese Communist Party are unsurpassed by any other organization in the history of the world. The CCP meets the United Nation’s definition of a transnational criminal organization. These atrocities need to end. Please sign this petition and share with others.

You can hardly call this a documentary when its main purpose is to send out negative messages about an international cooperating project. Think about it, why governments cooperate? cuz there are benefits, but you will not see any promoting of benefits in this so-called documentary. WEIRD! It sounds like propaganda rather than neutral documentary.

This video's aim looks like to create distrust among the people of the countries where China is investing to up lift them.
China is rising no one can stop it! And mostly Asian and African countries welcome China because they have tired of huge loans with higher interest rates and dictation from IMF and alike money-landers of our this modern world!
The most important thing is to ensure equality and peace among the people of all around the world as humans!
I myself worry about the attitude of China, China looks for capital and wealth over human rights! No democracy! 😭 That's what I support USA to be remain supper power!

what the hell…China sacrifices their workers' lives in helping Pakistan build roads and you call them soldiers of conquest? What kind of disgusting mentality is that? Most of the loans that China writes to other countries can be written off, do you know that? This is how modern banking works to support economic growth. Look at how much loans European Central Bank is writing every day. How much money it has been printing. At least, Chinese loans help those countries build their infrastructure. What the loans that ECB writes did? They all went to stock market and real estate market to boost up fake economy.

The airports, sea ports, and roads in Sri Lanka will play a vital role once it becomes a manufacturing hub. The infrastructure is there, it just needs a little bit more investment to do manufacturing.

Silk route project is truly a marvellous project combining Asia to Africa through major port cities… Gwadar and Chobahar. .. medieval trade routes wasn't this much advanced as we see it today… major obstacles into development of these silk route project are the same medieval nations which are still unable to understand the importance of these mega projects… India thinks that it's their 1st right to occupy this trade route… Iran thinks it's their 1st right to occupy this trade route… simultaneously Saudi Monopoly Agents thinks it's their 1st right to occupy this trade route… hence this entire project is under pendency due to regional trade rivalries among various corporations and fractions of nations which operates into these regions!! Basic intentions are very clear… whosoever will delay it.. will have their folders and files get fill up with various kinds of international currencies… for this particular goals… these corporations and fractions of nations are using their file attachments very trickiely to delay this entire project for their big bag benefits!! Terrorism and these regional wars are nothing but just a cleverly played dramas around such mega projects for big bags benefits!! China is a heartland which connects South America…North America .. Europe… Africa and Middle Eastern Regions through ports of Hong Kong, Japan and Koreas… hence such corporations and fractions of nations are rushing for their financial control around such mega projects and ports through using their file attachments!!

whoever done debt trap is evil, wether east or west, having capital does not mean you can flaunt your wealth to trap thy neighbor by debt to make yourself richer above others suffering:; making other than self poorer.
china does not represent goodwill of east, South East Asia Union should fight back to oppose this debt trap.

it is a fact that chinese from mainland, wether tourist or investor has no manner, i qoute from their phrase: "they are courting death", someday there will be uprising from native.
